Repair or Replace? A Guide for Luxury Appliances

Premium appliances are built to be repaired, which is exactly why the "repair or replace" question gets answered wrong so often — in both directions. Here is the framework we actually use, including the cases where we tell people not to repair.
Start with the replacement cost, not the repair cost
The number that matters is the ratio. A repair that looks expensive in isolation is usually trivial against what the appliance would cost to replace — and on built-in equipment, replacement isn't just the appliance. A built-in refrigerator has to fit an existing opening; an integrated dishwasher needs its custom panel; a pro range may not match the cutout or the gas line of the one before it. Those costs belong in the comparison.
The rough test
If the repair is under roughly half the cost of a comparable new unit and the appliance has meaningful service life left, repair. Above that, and with an appliance near the end of its life, replacement starts to make sense. The catch is the second half of that sentence: on this class of equipment, "near the end of its life" arrives much later than people assume.
Why built-in refrigeration almost always favours repair
These are five-figure appliances engineered for decades of service, and parts stay available for a long time. A several-hundred-dollar repair on a unit like that is straightforward math. A technician who recommends replacing a repairable Sub-Zero is either not trained on the platform or not being straight with you.
Professional ranges: usually repair
Almost everything that fails on a pro range is a serviceable component — ignition modules, igniters, sensors, thermostats, convection motors, door hardware. The burner system and cavity themselves are heavy steel and outlast the electronics by a wide margin.
When replacing genuinely wins
- Repeated sealed-system failures on a very old refrigeration unit. One sealed-system repair is often worth it; a second on the same aged unit is a pattern.
- A discontinued part with no equivalent. No part, no repair — this is the one case with no argument.
- Structural damage on an unsupported model, such as cracked cooktop glass where the surface is no longer made.
- Cumulative faults. Three unrelated failures inside a year on an old appliance is the machine telling you something.
The questions to ask before you decide
- What exactly failed, and what does that part cost?
- Is the part current-production or order-only?
- Is this the first significant repair, or one of several?
- What would replacing actually cost including installation and any cabinetry work?
- Is the repair covered by a labour warranty?
If a technician can't answer the first two, you don't have a diagnosis — you have a guess with a price attached.
