Blocked condenser airflow
Built-in condensers sit behind the upper grille and clog with dust, lint and pet hair. The compressor then runs longer and hotter, the fresh-food side drifts warm, and in bad cases the unit trips on thermal overload. Cleaning is maintenance — but neglected long enough it turns into a repair.
Evaporator or condenser fan motor
If the compressor runs but air isn't moving, cold stays trapped at the evaporator. Typical signs are a warm upper compartment while the freezer still holds, or a grinding or ticking noise that changes when you open the door.
Defrost circuit
A failed defrost heater, thermistor or control lets frost build on the evaporator until it blocks airflow completely. The tell is a slow warm-up over a day or two, usually with visible ice at the back of the freezer compartment.
Sealed-system leak or restriction
Low refrigerant or a restricted capillary shows up as long run times with poor cooling, often on one side only. This is EPA-regulated work — recovery, leak repair, evacuation and a weighed-in charge — and it is the fault where a wrong diagnosis gets expensive.
Control board and sensors
Older built-in generations use boards that fail with erratic readings, phantom alarms or a display that won't clear. A thermistor out of tolerance imitates a board failure closely, so both get tested before anything is replaced.
