Sub-Zero Not Cooling? Causes & What to Check First

A Sub-Zero that won't hold temperature is almost never a dead compressor. In the calls we take across Jacksonville, the cause is one of a handful of faults — and two of them you can check yourself in fifteen minutes before paying anyone.
First: which side is warm?
This single question narrows the diagnosis more than anything else. Several Sub-Zero families use dual refrigeration — two completely separate sealed systems, one for the fresh-food compartment and one for the freezer. If the refrigerator side is warm while the freezer is rock solid, you are almost certainly looking at a fault confined to one system. If both sides are drifting together, the cause is more likely shared: airflow, a control, or power.
Check 1 — the condenser (do this first)
Most built-ins draw air through a condenser behind the upper grille. In Jacksonville's heat and dust that condenser packs with lint and pet hair, and a clogged condenser makes the compressor run longer and hotter while the compartment slowly loses ground. Switch the unit off, pull the grille, and vacuum the coils with a brush attachment — carefully, without bending the fins.
If the unit recovers over the next several hours, that was your fault, and it was maintenance rather than a repair. If nothing changes, keep going.
Check 2 — is air actually moving?
Open the door and listen. On most built-ins you should hear the evaporator fan, and the sound should change when you press the door switch. A refrigerator that is warm while the compressor clearly runs usually means cold air is being made but not distributed — a failed evaporator fan, or an evaporator so frosted over that the fan can't push air past it.
Frost is a symptom, not the disease
Visible ice at the back of the freezer compartment points at the defrost circuit: a heater, thermistor or control that has stopped cycling. Frost builds until it blocks airflow entirely, which is why this fault shows up as a slow warm-up over a day or two rather than a sudden failure.
Check 3 — the door seal
Close the door on a sheet of paper and pull. If it slides out with no resistance, the gasket isn't sealing. In our humidity that means a constant load of warm, wet air — you'll often see condensation inside the cabinet or frost near the hinge before the temperature moves at all. Gaskets take a set over years and are a routine replacement.
What needs a technician
Sealed-system faults. Low refrigerant or a restriction shows up as long run times with poor cooling. This is EPA-regulated work — recovery, leak repair, evacuation and a weighed-in charge — and it is the one area where a wrong diagnosis gets expensive fast. It is not a DIY repair and it is not something to let a generalist guess at.
Control boards and sensors. Erratic temperature readings, alarms that won't clear or a display doing something strange can be a board — but a thermistor out of tolerance imitates a board failure almost perfectly. Both should be tested before either is replaced.
What not to do
- Don't turn the setpoint colder to compensate. It masks the symptom and makes the compressor work harder.
- Don't keep using a unit that is cycling on thermal overload — repeated overload trips are hard on the compressor.
- Don't let anyone quote a sealed-system repair without actually measuring pressures.
The honest summary
